Where your money goes

Donations to the HWF do contribute to feeding the hounds. But the largest portion of the retired hounds’ budget—as for any older pet—is for preventive veterinary care and diagnostics. This includes deworming and vaccinations, as well as blood tests and X-rays to diagnose illness or injury. In appropriate cases, it also can include surgical procedure such as limb repair, spaying and neutering, tumor removal, and similar procedures. Our goal is to correct non-life-threatening injuries, prevent more serious (and more expensive) problems from developing, and treat problems with a high success rate to allow the hound to live out a happy retirement.

Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic in Lexington, Ky., provides our routine veterinary care.

“When they go into retirement, our role is to help make a determination, as time goes on, about what might be wrong with the animal, and what can reasonably be done about it for the animal’s welfare and comfort in their golden years,” says our chief veterinarian, Dr. Kirk Snyder, DVM.

The key word is reasonable. The HWF does not allow hounds to suffer, nor does it prolong their lives past a humane point.

“When we arrive at a condition where they are unhappy,” Dr. Snyder says, “we feel that part of the care, part of our obligation, is to help end their lives painlessly and with dignity.”
